Car robberies are up in Montreal

Quebec

Key takeaways:

  • Handle smart keys with vigilance, and be cautious when purchasing certain cars, experts say.
  • Matt Graham had two Honda CR-Vs swiped outside his NDG residence within ten months.

When Matt Graham moved his suitcases out to his vehicle to pack them up for a family holiday, he was surprised to find they had been robbed outside his house in Montreal’s Notre-Dame-de-Grâce neighborhood.

“It sucked,” he stated of the October 2020 robbery. “The final thing you think is you’re going to go out to get your car, and your car’s not there.”

So when Graham got a substitute car — the 2020 model of his never retrieved 2019 Honda CR-V — he chose to better watch it by equipping it with a tracking system.

That made it easier for cops to find when, not ten months later, one or more burglars made off with his replacement car, too — ahead of yet another family holiday.

“We couldn’t even believe it,” Graham stated. “This is not possible that our vehicle has been robbed twice within the same year. Like, you think once in a lifetime is enough.”

Graham is part of a growing list of Montrealers who have lately lost their cars to thieves.
