Highway 1 opening a single lane in both directions only between Hope and Highway 9 east of Chilliwack

Highway 1 has been opened only between Hope and Highway 9 east of Chilliwack to a single lane of traffic in each direction, the Province and DriveBC announced Saturday night. The road from Abbotsford to Chilliwack remains closed.

According to the province, a highway maintenance contractor will keep removing debris and repairing road surfaces so that the highway can return to normal.

It is recommended that travellers plan for delays and be aware of construction conditions and reduced speed limits.

Although the Province’s Travel Restrictions Order does not apply to the stretch of Highway 1 through Bridal Falls and Popkum, drivers are asked to limit their travels to essential purposes only during cleanup and repair.

All major roads connecting the coast and the interior of the province were severely damaged by mudslides and extreme floods during a massive storm on Sunday and Monday, leading to crews working tirelessly to clear debris and restore highway access.

Friday, Highway 3 east of Hope was reopened to essential travel ahead of schedule, and Highway 99 was reopened on Saturday.
